Customer Rating: Summary: Hardware near perfect, Software a stumbling stone Comment: The hardware of the Asus Eee PC 1000HA is near perfect. If you can recall earlier generations of notebooks, the Eee PCs are a giant step forward in quality vs price - an unequivocal recommendation. Battery runtime with six cells is great.
The software... well, it's Windows XP. Even though Asus has to be lauded for not having included any "crapware" (useless pieces of advertising, trialware, or others), WinXP itself is still a hurdle. I've been a Windows/Linux user for many years (10+), and switched to Mac OS X more than a year ago. Now looking at a WinXP setup, with all the little switches and clicks and popups and adjustments is just a pain. Plainly, using the Eee with XP is like getting yourself a well-rounded system, only to tie it to your leg to hobble you down.
Concluding - if you're happy with WinXP, go for it, you probably won't get considerably better quality for your money anywhere else. If you're computer-savvy enough, try to install Mac OS X on it (or at least some streamlined Linux). Both alternatives have Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice with the same look and feel as under WinXP, which cover almost all everyday requirements.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pretty sweet, but... Comment: it doesn't have a cd drive. Which isn't really an issue very often, but it can be when you need to put microsoft office on it, or an anti-virus program that you did not buy from the internet...
this problem can be fixed in two ways: you can either buy an external disk drive that hooks up with a usb for 30 bucks or so online, or you can just borrow one whenever you need one (which only works when you know someone who has one). All in all it's an amazing computer, doesn't overheat, the keyboard takes some time to get used to but even if you have huge hands it will work out well after a while...
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Small Footprint Notebook Comment: This is an excellent small footprint notebook computer. It is exactly what I expected. I bought this for my wife who has never, ever, used a computer. It is a hit with her.
If you want a large screen this not the notebook for you. If you are a high tipped touch typist you may find the keyboard just slightly cramped. But this is a problem with the footprint not this computer. If these two issues are a problem for you, you don't want any small footprint computer.
My wife is a hunt and peck typist and for her it is perfect.
The screen is 1024 by 600 in its default and highly readable mode. Yhis is a hybrid of 1024 x 768 and 800x 600. You'll find you often have to scroll down if you want to see the lower portion of some screens.
I mention this so you know what you are getting into with a small footprint notebook.
That said, the advantages of a really small lightweight notebook far out weigh these tiny inconveniences. The really important thing is the designer of this computer have made all the right choices to optimize usability in this small footprint format.
The computer very powerful. I bought and added the 2 Gig memory option and the 8 Gig SD card. ""ake sure to F2 into the BIOS on startup. No need to change any settings in the BIOS, but the BIOS needs to automatically recognize the 2gb memory (Windows won't recognize it without the BIOS acknowledgment first)." I copied this quote from K. Bau's review. I repeat it for emphasis ant to assure you it does work. I can see some had trouble as I did. You must not press F2 until but immediately after pressing power on. I was pressing F2 and holding prior to pressing power on. This doesn't work.
The only other comment is we have not yet gotten the video camera working with Microsoft Live. I have gotten the camera to work offline. I have made a contact twice with the same person but the sound seems to have a serious feedback problem. I failed to get a connection with anyone else at all after several tries.
This I imagine is more a Microsoft Problem than this computer. I have had problems with Live on other computers.
If I get this to work I will update this post. I have not tried Skype because I don't know anyone with it.
So, all of that said, this is a great computer. It's advantages in power, capacity, size and weight far outweigh it's well compromised limitations. My wife uses it for hours on wireless battery mode with great success. Maybe I should get one.
Cheers,
Al Lococo

Customer Rating: Summary: Not my cup of tea Comment: I sold my Asus Eee PC 1000ha after using it extensively for around 10 days. Overall, this is a machine with great potential and this is also a machine with fatal flaws that are intolerable to me.
Pros
1. The keyboard is roomy, the alphabetic keys, the enter key and backspace key are big enough for touch typing. (some reviewers said they didn't like the right shift key, but luckily it's not a big problem for me, cause I only use the left shift key when I touch type)
2. Good performance-price ratio (Intel Atom, 1GB Ram, 160GB hard drive, 1.3M webcam, 6-cell battery make it a compelling buy for the current price tag)
Cons (things that make me not keeping this machine)
1. The left and right mouse buttons are way **too stiff to press**. No kidding, this eee pc has the worst left and right mouse buttons I have ever met in my life. You need to press REALLY HARD for a single click, it's even HARDER for a double click, it's almost impossible for me to complete tasks such as drag and drop by using these mouse buttons. My index finger became extremely painful after using the touch pad and mouse buttons for more than 15 minutes.
2. Before I bought this machine, I was expecting a relatively slow (when compared with C2D processors nowadays) but quite machine. After using it for 10 days, I found the speed is not a big problem for me, however, I didn't like the fact that this machine was as noisy as those cheap $4xx laptops. The fan keeps running when the room temperature is around 80 F.
Update: I bought a Dell Mini 9 after selling this Eee PC 1000ha. The Dell mini 9 uses a no-fan passive cooling design and there is no noise at all when the computer is running. The Mini 9 keyboard is not as roomy as Eee PC's, but the mouse buttons are at least as good as those in regular notebooks (please allow me to repeat again - the left and right buttons in eee pc 1000ha are abysmal)
Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome Comment: Awesome, Have enjoyed this EEE PC for three weeks now.
I only gave it 4 stars because Amazon didn't note that this unit didn't include BlueTooth. The description was EXACTLY the same for a unit priced $50 more, I later found out that the more expensive model did have BlueTooth, but could not exchange the unit.
Asus eee PC 1000HA five stars!
Amazon three stars :(
