Summary: start on medium
Comment: it's a fun game game quite easy on easy mode, the songs don't change after that, so I recomend starting on medium mode to give you a challenge.

Comment: Guitar Hero III is just as fun as its predecessors, but it took two giant steps forward and then six little steps back, ending up in pretty much the same place, but frustrating us with the knowledge it could have been more.
First, the songs are now mostly master tracks, which sounds amazing - there's nothing quite like hearing Mick Jagger belt out "Paint it Black" or Slash tearing it up on "Welcome to the Jungle." The graphics have also taken a big step up, and the venues are much more memorable - I think the Prison level is my favorite video game setting ever. Also, the tracklist is much less varied, and has a preponderance of recent songs.
That said, the game has also tinkered with what has worked well and made it work not so well. Some characters, like Pandora and the Grim Ripper (on the PS2 version, anyway), are gone. The star power meter has been changed from a bar to a clunky series of light bulbs, and all the readouts - including the fretboard - have shrunk. Reading your star power and score have become difficult, and a smaller fretboard is a killer, especially as the songs get faster and more complex.
Then there's "Battle" - a versus mode that throws score out the window and makes the victory condition to make your opponent fail. Instead of star power, you get attacks that make your opponent's job harder by bumping up the difficulty, doubling the notes, or a number of other nefarious methods. While a fun multiplayer method, the single-player game forces you to go through three battles, and the bosses tend not to miss a note. So you could outscore them 1,000,000 to 2, but because you didn't make them fail you lose. It's frustrating to take a game that is otherwise about skill and throwing a whole new tactic at it for one song every three or four levels.
All in all, GH3 is a strong game, but its few shortcomings were because the developers tinkered with something that was working fine and broke it. Because of that, fans of GH1 & GH2 will always notice what is missing.

Comment: The tracklisting isn't as good as 2, but offers some great songs. Sadly, the Star Power isn't as exciting. It's just like the character's playing the guitar, but the playing field is blue and sparkly. Meh. The hammer ons and pull offs are a little better, I think. But, they still don't have a choose Lead or Bass guitar option, which is what the series really needs instead of only offering bass on co-op or something. I think the medium level of play is a little easier than GH2's... but, in 2, after mastering easy, the more advanced modes offered new songs and stages. This one, all you really need to do is play it on easy, unlock everything, and resell the game. No replay value after getting 5 stars on easy, unless you wanna try to get 5 on medium/hard/expert.

Comment: This game was a christmas gift to my boyfriend.He has enjoyed playing this game for many hours. If one wants to be ignored for a long period of time this is the game to get ones companion. I have played it a few times myself and did find it very addiciting but also fun. Woman with children should give this a try when they want to be left alone for a while.
