Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Knife Design Comment: This Irwin folding knife is a very good design. The blade is securely locked in the holder and does not come out during use like some other designs I have used. The 45 deg folding feature makes it easy to change the blade, again unlike some other designs I have used. It's a good!
Customer Rating: Summary: Okay, but not perfect... Comment: I purchased this at a local store for breaking down cardboard boxes at work. I collect higher-end folding knives so this review comes from someone who may be a bit more critical than most...just a heads-up.
The knife is nice and light with a great pocket clip as compared to most folding utility knives--not too tight but not so loose that it will get lost. The metal bits are pretty well-finished and the lockback mechanism locks up tight. I really like the way it looks.
Unfortunately, the plastic handle, while light, feels cheap and does not have the best ergonomics. The groove that your forefinger sits in while holding the knife has a sharp edge that runs all around your finger. I can definitely see where this would cause blisters during use--my finger started to hurt in just the first few minutes of use. If you wear gloves it's no problem, but if not.... I may sand down the edges with my Dremel.
Another gripe is the blade holding mechanism. It really bugs me that the blade is not held tight--it moves back/forth about 1mm and side/side a bit as well. If you are trying to cut something with precision I can see where this would make for some sloppy cuts. I'm just breaking down boxes so this is not a big deal, but the rattling sound of the blade in the tool really drives me nuts. I prefer the locking mechanism found on other knives which has a lever on top with a pivoting plate which holds the blade tight.
Hope this helps...
Customer Rating: Summary: better than the rest! Comment: The knife has fixed all the problems where other folding utility knives fall short. No sharp blade change tab to catch your thumb and either cut you, or make your blade come out.
Since this knife has to be moved to the half open position to change the blade, you know that when it's locked, that blade isn't going anywhere!
Great knife!
