Customer Rating: Summary: Great Product... Comment: Not a bad product at all. Best sharpening system I have found to date.
Would I buy another? YES
Customer Rating: Summary: A disappointment Comment: Lansky Diamond Deluxe Sharpening System with Extra Coarse, Coarse, Medium and Fine Hones
I have been messing with this system for some months. In addition to the diamond hones, I bought the sapphire super fine hone. The system will improve a dull knife. It does not provide what I consider a sharp kitchen knife. The edge is not polished. The notion that the result of using the system will shave the hair on your arm is foolishness.
I have tried electric sharpeners and sharpening services. The former grind down knives excessively and the cost of shipping for the latter makes this method expensive with results about on a par with the Lansky system. The good reviews for Lansky raised my hopes that I had finally found the answer. Not so.
The clamp of the system is not well designed. It will grip knives with flat sides. But the sides of the blades on some of my kitchen knives are not perfectly flat. The clamp cannot get a secure grip on those knives. Ironically the video on the Lansky web site demonstrates sharpening a knife that, based on my experience, would slip out or turn in the Lansky clamp.
Customer Rating: Summary: Lansky Diamond Deluxe Comment: Excellent item to use and it does exactly what it was meant to do.....works great!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great sharpening solution Comment: I own a number of Benchmade pocket knives and usually keep them sharp with one of the ceramic V pocket sharpeners. Recently, I bought a used Benchmade knife with an M2 blade. The M2 blade is the hardest steel you can get in a pocket knife and is currently out of production because it is so difficult to work with. The knife I bought had been poorly sharpendd and needed the edge angle changed.
I researched different methods on the web and finally found the Lansky YouTube video that shows exactly how to use the product.
I am certainly happy with the outcome. The diamond hones are the only thing that could reshape the M2 edge in any reasonable amount of time. They made quick work of the process and I finished it off with the separate extra fine hone that others have recommended.
The results were so good that I sharpened two additional knives while I was at it. My left arm is now pretty much bald from testing their ability to shave hair.
Customer Rating: Summary: Ok for some applications, skip if you have Japanese kitchen knives Comment: Pretty flimsy construction and cheap feel for the price.
You can skip it entirely if you own Japanese kitchen knives (Shun etc.) as the angle will not be steep enough. In spite of how it is marketed it really is not a good all around set up. Try the Lansky Crock Sticks. Simple, good quality unit that will take care of all but serrated blades.
Buy some Crock Sticks with medium & fine ceramic rods & a strop with some polishing rouge for much better results & save about 25 bucks.
For many sporting knives the stones are also too wide for proper contact, depending on blade type (especially any mild recurve).
I was very disapointed after reading the reviews and then purchasing. So, buyer be aware of the product limitations.
