Customer Rating: Summary: Whet your chops with chills Comment: My tribute to the Fall season, Halloween in particular, is ordering new magazine subscriptions in the dark fantasy and science fiction genres, in addition to renewing already existing subscriptions. One of my new subscriptions this October was DARK DISCOVERIES, a glossy horror magazine published quarterly, now starting its third year of publication. The magazine arrived within one week of my subscribing to it (at the magazine's Web site); and after reading the issue from cover to cover I can say with certainty that DARK DISCOVERIES is a successful labor of love for the publisher and editor, James R. Beach. His enthusiasm is extant throughout the magazine. Then again, Mr. Beach should feel good about it: DARK DISCOVERIES is a nifty addition to the horror genre.
Associate editors are David Emrich, Joyce Beach, and Don Koish. Contributing editors are Kevin Etheridge, Bill Gauthier ("American Gauthic"), Michael D. Noble, and Jonathan Reitan. The Summer Issue #8 features a nonfiction article by William P. Simmons entitled "Dark Devotions," which focuses on some of the lesser-known writers in the horror genre. The issue also features six short fiction selections; one of which is entitled "Three Floors Down We Cleanse the Soul" by Michelle Scalise, a particularly chilling little piece about familial decay in the South. Other outstanding authors in this issue include Kealan Patrick Burke, Stephen Mark Rainey, Kevin L. Donihe, Brian Knight, and Ken Goldman. James Beach includes two interviews, one with Stephen Mark Rainey, and the other with Brian Knight.
If you are a fan of the genre who wants to support not only its writers but also the terrific magazines that publish these writers, might I suggest you consider adding DARK DISCOVERIES to your list of magazine subscriptions? You will not be disappointed.
