Summary: A disappointment
Comment: Think of a female alien, originally from an all female planet, and to that add the things you associate with TV series such as "X-files", "Babylon Five" or "Star Trek" and movies such as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" or "ET". So you have the alien obsessed people living in the middle of the desert, the alien kidnappings and the stealing of foetus, visions, telepathy, the gift of superpowers but without regards to a prime directive. Then, to all of this you add several lesbians, lesbian sex and love at first telepathy, a bit of self-deprecating humour, and you have "Night Vision". After this description it is not difficult to see that this is not a good SF book and Laura Adams (Karin Kallmaker) seems to acknowledge that when she makes her main character think '(...) to end up in some third-rate SF story without any special effects, no big budget stars, just me, four rather ordinary women, a dilapidated motorhome, and a crazy reporter who told me the one person I'd ever felt safe with, ever opened my deepest wounds to, was from outer space'. Even the romance part is very poor, since the plot has all the clichés that you can think of, and there is no character development at all. Especially irritating is the fact that all the men in the book, are either abusive or rapists. For instance, Julia has a past of abuse, but it does not make sense that she has been abused by ALL of her mother's boyfriends: 'Boyfriends and jobs came and went with equal rapidity (...) by the time I was fifteen I didn't even learn their names. I didn't even want to know who was trying the knob on my bedroom door and cursing quietly when he found it locked.' In summary, this is not a recommended book.

Summary: Best lesbian sci-fi I've read
Comment: There's no sub-text here! No coy looks or cuddles -- this story is about LESBIANS. It's a great story, too. I really liked Maddy's character. She's very real and funny. All these unbelievable things start happening to her and she really doesn't believe them until she has proof. It's way better than the X Files. Really diverting, I read it in a long night. It was a terrific roller coaster all the way. I laughed a lot, got goosebumps, cried twice and almost had to wake up my girlfriend after some really amazing ... passages. Totally FIVE stars. This should be a movie!

Summary: I didn't know there were books like this
Comment: I seem to spend my reading time sifting through science fiction or fantasy books to glean a little bit of lesbian content, or even a smattering of sub-text. I had no idea that anyone but Jean Stewart was writing sci-fi with central lesbian characters. Not only does Night Vision focus on a central lesbian character -- who is hilariously funny in a backhanded way -- most of the characters are lesbians and the entire plot turns on that fact. This was an absolutely riveting and satisfying read and I will certainly by looking into other Laura Adams books.

Summary: Better than the X-Files
Comment: After reading Laura Adams's incredible "Sleight of Hand" I decided I had to read her other books. The only disappointment I had with this book was that it is shorter than Sleight of Hand. In spite of that, the plot was completely executed, with every loose end tied up. Maddy is sardonic and funny, and I believed everything that happened to her was possible. Unlike the X-Files, the story was completely lesbian. The ending was moving and very satisfying. I've never liked romance novels per se, but if the love scenes in this book generate a fraction of the usual heat in what this woman writes, I might have to force myself to read the books under the Kallmaker name.

Summary: I'm a believer
Comment: Night Vision is a fantastic science fiction story, tightly plotted and convincingly real. When a group of lesbians realize that they are all sharing the same nightmares, their search for answers leads them into the heart of the Mojave Desert and to a woman named Sirena, who is being held captive. The problems they encounter, the talents they all bring to the table forms an inspired story as told by Maddy. Maddy's low expectations from life and love have made her sarcastic and self-deprecating, and her wit is delightful. She doesn't believe that you can find love in nightmares, but as she is convinced, so are we.

The science fiction/fantasy plot seems to be the hallmark of Karin Kallmaker's Laura Adams pseudonym, but the underlying romance and physicality is pure Kallmaker. Only Karin Kallmaker could write an .... with only two people in the room. Crucial to the plot, these scenes nevertheless melt the pages they're printed on.

I'll pick up a romance novel before science fiction or fantasy, but in the case of "Laura Adams" I won't hesitate in the future. Kallmaker/Adams delivers on both levels.

Editorial Reviews:

Julia Madison is having nightmares. Every night. All night. Painful and perplexing, the nightmares of a woman in captivity calling for help escalate until she is having them during the day, wide awake. Doctors prescribe pills. Therapists theorize about past lives and post-traumatic stress. Fortune tellers predict she will meet a tall, mysterious stranger. Julia would prefer to blame her ex, her job, even the Santa Ana winds.

In spite of her long history as a loner, she turns to a support group for women with sleep disorders. To her amazement she learns that the other lesbians in the group--and only the lesbians--are having similar nightmares. No longer believing these vivid night visions are in their heads, the women join forces to find the source of their disturbance.

Since Julia knows that her dreams focus on the woman she's named Sirena, finding Sirena is her number one priority. Convincing the other lesbians to help her comb the Mojave Desert is only the beginning of the adventure.
