Summary: Fascinating and Well-Produced
Comment: Really, a quite well-done documentary. I found it engaging from a theological, anthropological and (though not my strong suit) scientifically.

Summary: Are they the Children of Senaah?
Comment: LOST TRIBES OF ISRAEL
Produced by Chris Hale and David Espar
approx. 60 minutes

This is a good NOVA documentary about a group in southern Africa whose culture shares a lot with early Judaism. The video takes a look at some of the beliefs and traditions as well as the very real possibility that they are descended from the Biblical Twelve Tribes of Israel.

There are basically two parts to this investigation. The first is a brief section on genetics where the Lemba population (in particular their "Babu" clan) are shown to posess the famed chromosome found in the Jewish Cohanim priest class. We discover that it is found in "just under one in every 10" of each tribe member, a significantly higher rate than average.

The second part is a closer look at the oral history of the Lemba. They claim that they came from a place called "Sennah" (also spelled Sena or Senna). The Bible mentions "the children of Senaah" in Nehemiah chapter 7 along with several other groups who were displaced by Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II but would return to their homeland. Contemporary research on the Lemba suggests that Sennah is located in Yemen. The group also shares some customs with Judaism, e.g. similar symbols, dietary and marriage rules, etc.

This is a good starting off point for anybody interested in the 12 tribes of Israel. It isn't the most thorough tape in the world, but would be a good tool for discussing ancient traditions that have survived into the 21st century.

Summary: Lost Tribes of Israel
Comment: By far one of the most intriguing episodes of Nova! I've been a fan of the show for decades and this is one of the best episodes of the series. It follows the claim that many Ethiopians are directly descended from the lost tribes of Isreal. The most fascinating part of the show was when the researchers started conducting DNA tests searching for the "Cohen" gene. Basically, the word Cohen loosely translates into "man of God". They conducted this test on American Jews and Ethiopian Jews and found the "Cohen" gene more often in Ethiopian Jews than in other Jewish populations.

Editorial Reviews:

Nearly 3,000 years ago, ten of Israel’s founding tribes were defeated by the Assyrians and banished from ancient Judea. Today, people from as far away as Japan, India and Ethiopia claim to be the descendents of Israel’s Lost Tribes. For instance, 4,000 miles from Jerusalem’s sacred Western Wall, members of the Lemba tribe have names like Solomon and David. They practice a secret language and follow strict dietary rules. But are their beliefs based on myth or reality? See how this South African tribe is putting their heritage to the test.

Join anthropologist Tudor Parfitt and take a scientific and genealogical adventure that leads from the Holy Land through Zimbabwe, to the wilderness of Southern Yemen and a modern-day London gene lab. See how today’s technology can solve an ancient Biblical riddle and explore the modern genetic techniques that reveal never-before-seen connections between people, giving the past unprecedented new clarity.
