Summary: Great Cookbook !!
Comment: Lots of wonderful recipes for the crockpot. Lots of great ideas that you wouldn't normally think about. The first section about how to properly use a crockpot is worth the price of the book alone. Very informative, and saved me lots of grief. Now I know how to cook with a crockpot with lots of confidence. It's like taking an in depth college course on how to use a crockot.

Wonderful book, I highly recommend it.

Summary: The best cookbook for slow cooking
Comment: I bought this cookbook after several friends told me it was the best cookbook for slow cooking. Boy, were they right. I had been scouring the internet for recipes for my new slowcooker and finding that most called for simply pouring lots of canned ingredients in there and walking away. Yuck! This cookbook appealed to me right away because it calls for mainly fresh ingredients and features contemporary recipes from a variety of regions. The result is slow cooking perfection-- recipes that are simple to make, but don't rely too much on processed ingredients, and taste fantastic. My favorite recipes so far include the White Bean Soup with Bacon and the Thai Pork. Delicious! I highly recommend this cookbook.

Summary: I love this book!!
Comment: I have 3 different sized slow cookers. This book has recipes for each of them. I love the cereal recipes. The maple cranberry granola is to die for. The recipes are easy to follow, and the notes and comments are interesting and informative.

Summary: Crock pot recipes with FLAVOR!
Comment: I love to cook with my crock pot and am always looking for new recipes. One of my complaints with crock pot cook books is that their recipes are rather bland. This book, however, has many flavorful recipes that are well worth making. The added bonus is that the ingredients are either seasonal and/or easy to find in your local supermarket and/or farmer's market.

The authors do a wonderful job of explaining how to cook with slow cookers so that you almost feel like you have taken a cooking class on slow cooking. I plan to buy the other Not Your Mother's books.

Summary: Disappointing! Lots of variety, but not the kind I'm seeking.
Comment: Disappointing. I wish I hadn't spent the money. Speaking of money's worth, the binding is of poor quality. I've only had mine for a few months and already pages are falling out. Overall, I'm not happy with this purchase. Here's why.

1- There are no pictures. Isn't part of enjoying a meal the visual appeal? What's a cookbook with no pictures? Photographs of the finished meal encourage me to try recipes I might otherwise have ignored. Without photos, I've ignored a lot of these recipes.

2- A huge portion of this book is devoted to secondary courses: sauces, breads, sides and desserts. If I want to make a cake, I'm going to use my oven, not my crockpot. Maybe I'm being too traditional. I understand the point of this book is to be less traditional, so I guess these recipes are consistent with that purpose, but many take only 1-2 hours to cook. Isn't the point of a slow cooker to make your meal in the morning and eat it later? I want recipes that make main courses and give me at least 5 hours of "down time" between prep and serve.

3- The recipes I did try were not great. In fact, there are only two recipes from this book that I've marked "keepers." The Corned Beef and Cabbage is fantastic and recurs frequently on our menus; the Pork with Apples was also good. Other than these two, I've not found much we like from this book.

If you're looking for 16 different ways to make oatmeal and 14 different chili recipes or you want your slow cooker to be an all-purpose appliance, this may be the best cookbook for you. Otherwise, try another.
