Chicago Landmine Organization to Participate in Nairobi Summit
Landmines Blow!, a Chicago based NGO dedicated to raising awareness of the global landmine crisis will participate in the Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World, the first Review Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty, from November 29 – December 3, 2004 in the Kenyan capital.
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) September 3, 2004 -- Landmines Blow!, a Chicago based
organization dedicated to raising awareness of the global landmine crisis will
participate in the Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World, the first Review
Conference of the Mine Ban Treaty, from November 29 – December 3, 2004 in the
Kenyan capital. Hundreds of participants including world leaders, government
ministers, NGOs, international organizations, youth and UN agencies will gather
in Nairobi for the Summit as well as numerous side events.
The Nairobi
Summit is the first review conference of the convention, which prohibits
landmines and the biggest milepost since its birth in Ottawa in December 1997.
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) is working hard to ensure its
success, together with partners in government, the United Nations, the
International Committee of the Red Cross and others.

Landmines Blow! President said,“We are taking part in the Nairobi Summit to add
our voices to the call for action to be taken to stop landmines and other
explosive remnants of war from destroying livelihoods and lives in the world’s
poorest countries and at the same time, highlighting the ongoing crisis
landmines and explosive remnants of war cause.”
More than 500 delegates,
including decision makers at the highest levels, are expected. President Mwai
Kibaki of Kenya will open the event, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan may close
it and Pope John Paul II and Jordan’s Queen Noor are also expected to
contribute.
Bock founded Landmines Blow!, a grass roots non-profit in
2003. The organization aims to educate and engage American youth while building
schools and playgrounds on cleared minefields.
Landmines Blow! is a
member of the United States Campaign to Ban Landmines, a nation-wide coalition
of nearly 500 non-governmental organizations and thousands of individual members
advocating for the US government to join the Mine Ban Treaty and sustain high
levels of support for de-mining and victim assistance. It is a member of the
1997 Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Ban
Landmines.
