New Book Provides a Unique Perspective Into Prison Life.
Square One Publishing has just released the 1st in a series of fun and anecdotal books depicting prison life. “Criminals let em’ fry, sauté and boil: a guide to prison cell cooking”, written by Terry Lachelt and Theresa Marie, reflects 40 years of prison life through stories, art and recipes.
(PRWEB) December 11, 2004 -- Terry Lachelt has been in Prison for 40 years
and writes about everyday exploits of prisoner and their families. He describes
simple everyday events that Prisoners and Correctional Officers everywhere can
relate to. He describes the reaction of the DOC staff to the first AIDS patient
brought into the California Department of Corrections and illustrates the
situational agony of visitors and staff confronted with impromptu situations.
His brief descriptions of the atypical habits of Murders are funny and original
and his ability to adapt to prison life is apparent through his humor. As Anne
Rose Pierce, talk show host of Prison Pipeline, says, “it is a great book to
read one that anyone would enjoy”.
Theresa Marie exposes the habits of
the more resourceful prisoners, by describing how they prepare food in their
cell, alter cooking utensils and manufacture alcohol. The recipes incorporate a
range of cooking styles from Mary Jane Apple Pie to Rattlesnake stew. The
recipes themselves often use slang and other terms that demonstrate the unique
behaviors of prisoners. Former prisoner Robert Lee proclaims the book to be a
success at portraying prison culture. One Oregon Newspaper, The Portland Mercury
says it, “provide(s) something we rarely experience”, and, “offer(s) informative
and humanistic glimpses into the places where peoples' lives aren't lived
freely”.
The artwork is typical prison style tattoo art and may appear
demonic at times, but the black and white images are simply reminiscent of the
world from which they came. One reader says, “The artwork alone is worth far
more than the price of the book”.
“Criminals let em’ fry, boil and sauté”
doesn’t bombard the reader with opinions and facts about prisons. It is a simple
and unique view into prison life; one that most people don’t ordinarily get. The
