Jennifer Shryock is
a certified dog behavior consultant who has been hands on with dogs since a very
young age. She has a B.A. in Special Education and is the Mother of three
children. The Shryock family has fostered over 60 dogs and many cats over the
years to provide new and challenging hands on learning opportunities. It was
through fostering and becoming active in dog rescue that Jennifer saw the need
for education about safety between dogs and kids.
All too often dogs are
abandoned or re-homed due to a lack of education and fear once a baby arrives.
Many families have unsafe expectations about dogs and their role with children.
This is what drove Jennifer to create Dogs & Storks™
Common
questions families have:
“How should we introduce them?”
“What does it
mean when my dog barks at the crib while my baby is crying?”
“Will he be
jealous and take it out on the baby?”
“What if he won’t accept the
baby?”
Common comments we hear that are alarming:
“He just knows the
baby is ours and he protects him.”
“He is the first one to run when the baby
cries…it is so cute.”
“It is so cute when he licks the baby all over. He just
loves the baby.”
“We were told to put the baby on the floor and let the dogs
sniff him.”
This last one is the most alarming, and yes, we still hear
parents say a professional told them to put the baby on the floor and allow the
dog to sniff them when they first arrive home. This is absolutely dangerous and
why this program is needed.
Jennifer Shryock is dedicated to providing
accurate and practical ongoing education for professionals and families
regarding safety and fun between children and the family dog. She offers a
variety of programs and presentations all communities can benefit from.
Education is the way to be proactive in prevention. Knowledge and
awareness is empowering.
