The SJ/SV NAACP issued a call for the Mayor and City Council in the City of San Jose to place on the next city wide ballot an initiative to change the form of governance to a Strong Mayor system. SAN JOSE, CA (PREWB) June 1, 2005 -- Today, the San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP
issued a call for the Mayor and City Council in the City of San Jose to place on
the next city wide ballot an initiative to change the form of governance to a
Strong Mayor system.
The NAACP has formally issued a call for a strong
Mayor form of government after clear evidence was unearthed by the NAACP that a
City of San Jose grant evaluation process has been at best flawed and at worst
includes deliberate and malicious bias towards the African American community.
Rick Callender President of the SJ/SV NAACP said, “It is imperative that
all who are City of San Jose residents know that there is accountability with
and trust in our professional staff at the City of San Jose. The only way we can
ensure that all of our voices are represented is through the ballot box. This is
obviously factual since we have little minority representation and no African
American representation on upper on mid management staff, we have to ask who is
representing our voices, values and interests. Clearly our voice can only be
represented through the ballot box.”
The NAACP and several leaders of the
African American community have written a letter officially calling on the City
Managers office and the Mayor to conduct an official investigation into the
findings of the NAACP.
The National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People, is the oldest, largest and strongest civil rights organization
in the United States. The principal objective of the NAACP is to ensure the
political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens
of the United States. The San Jose/Silicon Valley Branch of the NAACP was
founded in 1952.
