MVNOs: A New Brand Of Insurgent Is Emerging

Amid these market pressures – and in response to them – a new brand of insurgent, the Mobile Virtual Network Operator, is emerging. The MVNO represents a significant development in the wireless services market and is a key milestone in moving to the next wave of wireless adoption.

EAST BRUNSWICK (PRWEB) May 19, 2005 -- Following a period of rapid growth, the wireless market in the United States is moving toward the first phase of maturity. This is evident by the declining growth rate of postpaid customers and the increase in minutes of use accompanied by falling revenue per minute. While wireless carriers face the ongoing issues of return on shareholder investment, customer discretional wallet share growth, customer lifecycle management and competition, the real challenge for service providers has rapidly moved from managing internal growth related issues to “stimulating the great ‘un-wirelessed’ market,” says John Green, wireless industry solution partner at BusinessEdge Solutions, an industry-focused business and technology integrated consulting firm that serves the communications industry.

Amid these market pressures – and in response to them – a new brand of insurgent, the Mobile Virtual Network Operator, is emerging. The MVNO represents a significant development in the wireless services market and is a key milestone in moving to the next wave of wireless adoption. On Wednesday, May 18, Mr. Green will speak about this new brand of insurgent at the 2005 Wireless & Mobile WorldExpo Conference in Toronto. In “MVNOs – One Name, Many Flavors,” Mr. Green will discuss how the MVNO will cause defection from existing service providers and add to the traditionally high churn rates among wireless carriers – at the same time that it will stimulate demand and open up new market areas.

Mr. Green, who has more than 25 years of experience in both the wireline and wireless industries in the United States, Europe and Asia, says the MVNOs will be attractive to organizations with a strong brand and / or loyal customers. Other communications companies that recognize not only the advantages of bundled offerings, but can also take advantage of convergent communications technology, such as least cost routing, single mailbox and single ring will also be interested in the MVNO model. Large corporations will also be attracted as a way of creating integrated communications platforms, he says.

But Mr. Green, who has worked in both business operations and information technology and has successfully implemented and managed wireless IT systems and processes including care and billing systems, eCommerce and eCare, cautions that the MVNO is entering a complex market space where the rate of change in products, services and increasing customer demand is high. “To be successful requires good market segmentation, a strong host network and the necessary infrastructure,” says Mr. Green. “As with all emergent players, there will be winners and losers.”

When entering the wireless market, MVNOs must evaluate options that include revenue enhancement, reuse of core assets, network and services, convergence of technology, customer loyalty and market position defense. “They must also carefully map out the appropriate degree of financial investment and commitment as well as a marketing and operating strategy in which all variables have been considered, understood and anticipated.”
